Barnett's transfer to UCF from James Madison was a significant coup for the Knights. He had previously catapulted the Dukes into the College Football Playoff and garnered the title of Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year coupled with first-team All-Sun Belt recognition. His stellar last season stats—2,806 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns with eight interceptions, coupled with 589 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns—evidenced his adeptness at the helm. However, his impact at UCF has been limited due to the injury, having only played two games thus far, during which he managed 344 passing yards, two touchdowns through the air, one interception, and added 22 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
