News - Джуди Денч критикует чрезмерное использование предупреждающих надписей в искусстве

Dame Judi Dench has expressed strong opposition to the proliferation of trigger warnings in theaters and movies, describing them as a form of 'mollycoddling' that detracts from the storytelling experience. In a candid discussion with The Times, Dench shared her thoughts ahead of the release of her memoir, 'Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?' The acclaimed actress argues that while certain warnings about strobe lighting or gunshots are necessary, the extensive use of trigger warnings has gone beyond their intended purpose. Dench humorously remarked that the lengthy list of trigger warnings for a play like 'Titus Andronicus' might overshadow the actual content. She further suggested that such warnings remove the element of surprise and excitement that makes theater and cinema captivating. Dench emphasized the value of art as a medium that provokes, challenges, and disturbs, urging audiences to embrace the emotional intensity that performance art offers. She asked rhetorically whether notifying audiences of plot twists, such as revealing the culprit in an Agatha Christie play, would serve or undermine the art form. Dench called for a balance, stressing that excessive warnings risk sanitizing art and robbing viewers of genuine enjoyment. The 91-year-old actress further illustrated her stance with humor and anecdotal evidence, questioning whether supermarkets should issue warnings for everyday items like bananas, which a friend of hers finds unpleasant. Film critic Christian Toto weighed in, supporting Dench's stance and describing her viewpoint as a needed dose of common sense in the current artistic landscape. He suggested that Dench's insights serve as a reminder of art's essential role in challenging perceptions and fostering engagement. With her steadfast message, Dench hopes to prompt a reevaluation of how trigger warnings are applied, encouraging audiences to willingly engage with the full spectrum of emotions that theatrical and cinematic experiences offer.
