Kid Cudi is set to embark on an ambitious journey to portray the legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in a self-written and directed film titled 'Jean.' Announcing the project via Instagram on October 21, Cudi expressed his excitement and pride over this creative venture, which is scheduled to begin filming in 2027. The Ohio-born musician-turned-actor disclosed that he chose to take matters into his own hands after repeated inquiries and a lack of motion on a Basquiat biopic. Cudi shared that creating a film about a real-life figure presented a welcome challenge, requiring extensive research, conversations with those who knew Basquiat, and a deep dive into the artist's world. With this film, Cudi aims to craft a 'love letter to Jean,' capturing the essence of the 1980s New York art scene and Basquiat's enduring impact on American culture. Basquiat's work, noted for its rawness and poignant commentary on race and class issues, earned him a formidable reputation during his short-lived career. The film comes at a point when Cudi's Hollywood career is gaining momentum. Known for his roles in movies like 'Happy Gilmore 2,' 'House Party,' and 'Entergalactic' on Netflix, Cudi is also poised to make his directorial debut in an upcoming project titled 'Doe' and will be featured alongside Barbie Ferreira in the horror film 'Wrong Number.' In his announcement, Cudi teased fans with a behind-the-scenes photo of himself in character, donning a suit and Basquiat's iconic tousled hairstyle. He expressed the honor he feels in being able to tell Basquiat's story, hoping to present it in a novel light. For Cudi, this project isn't just a biopic; it's a testament to daring dreamers and a homage to an artist who has inspired him throughout his artistic journey. As the entertainment world anticipates this unique portrayal, both fans of Cudi and admirers of Basquiat await a film that promises to blend the vibrancy of art with the emotional depth of its subjects.
