Yap Launches Innovative Project for Coral Reef Conservation

by Lilit May 20, 2026

In the Federated States of Micronesia, a new initiative is underway to strengthen the resilience of coral reefs in Yap, thanks to a collaborative effort between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF). Known as the Yap Resilience Hub, this three-year project aims to support local conservation efforts through a combination of modern scientific techniques and traditional stewardship practices, extending its support until 2028. Berna Gorong, who manages capacity building at TNC Micronesia & Polynesia, emphasizes the central role of coral reefs in Yap's society. They are a source of sustenance, economic activity, and cultural identity. Managed traditionally under community and clan oversight, these reefs are deeply connected to the region's heritage and daily life. The project plans to establish a steering committee composed of government figures, traditional leaders, and local representatives to identify reefs that need protection. This selection process will consider the ecological health, regenerative capacity, interconnection with other reef systems, as well as the readiness and governance capabilities of local communities. Once a set of priority reefs is designated, the initiative will support local action plans to ensure conservation strategies align with community-led priorities and leadership. According to Gorong, this approach will focus on capacity building, enabling local stakeholders to continue these efforts beyond the project's immediate timeline. The broader aim, Gorong explains, is to strengthen the reefs' resilience while enhancing the long-term welfare of Yap’s residents and coastal areas. This goal aligns with the challenges posed by the growing threats of rising sea levels and climate disruptions, which, while generally less urgent in Micronesia than in other regions, are steadily increasing. Dawnette Olsudong from the Palau International Coral Reef Center highlights the need for such proactive initiatives. Although she is not directly involved in the project, her research on coral restoration in Yap underscores the importance of informed conservation efforts to identify and rehabilitate areas seen as degraded by local communities. The Yap Resilience Hub is part of the larger Resilient Reefs Pasifika initiative, receiving financial support from the GBRF. The initiative is seen as a beacon of hope and action, set against the vibrant backdrop of Yap’s unique underwater ecosystems, where stunning coral formations captured in iconic images from Manta Ray Bay reflect the rich biological diversity of the region.
