Armenia's Electoral Code Revision Sparks Debate

by Lilit April 7, 2026

In a significant political move, the Armenian government has revised the Electoral Code in 2024, triggering substantial backlash and debate. The amendments, initially aimed at rectifying a specific clause, inadvertently nullified an entire paragraph, sparking concerns about rushed legislative processes. In response, the ruling 'Civil Contract' party convened an urgent parliamentary session to address the issue. As part of these changes, new stipulations have been introduced, banning the use of personal names and certain phrases in the names of political alliances. This amendment has significant implications for alliances such as 'Strong Armenia with Samvel Karapetyan,' which may need to rebrand as a consequence. Critics, including opposition parties and political analysts, have condemned the amendments, arguing that they undermine democratic principles by restricting free expression and could potentially skew future electoral outcomes in favor of the ruling party. The contended amendments passed with a narrow margin of 66 votes in favor against 16 opposing. Opposition parties vow to continue their fight, promising to challenge the legality of the amendments in Armenia's Constitutional Court. The controversy over these electoral changes has reignited political tensions within the country, highlighting the ongoing struggle for political power and the quest for a fair electoral process.
