Community Rallies for Columbia Bike Shop after Theft

by Lilit March 22, 2026

In the wake of a recent robbery, Columbia's beloved nonprofit bike shop, Cola Town Bike Collective, has experienced an outpouring of community support. Launching a fundraiser on March 16 to regain its footing, the shop received over $3,680 from 45 generous donors, surpassing its initial $3,500 goal by 3:40 p.m. Despite facing the immediate challenge of a stolen computer system that halted all transactions, the shop's spirit remains unbroken. With the contributions from the public, the shop expects to resume normal operations by the end of the week, reinforcing its essential role in Columbia's cycling community. Even before the fundraiser, local businesses and individuals showed remarkable generosity. Indah Coffee on Sumter Street, for instance, donated a spare point-of-sale system—a crucial component that would have cost the shop over $600 to replace. This act of kindness helped reduce the shop's remaining losses to manageably around $3,500. In a poignant note on their fundraising page, the shop acknowledged the unfortunate timing of the loss. Having just emerged from a successful winter, they were eager to embrace the warmer months, bringing new momentum to the cycling season. Instead, they're diverting their focus to replacing stolen equipment essential for daily operations. Despite the setback, Freeman, a representative of the shop, maintains a positive outlook. He expressed gratitude for their current location on Elmwood Avenue, where they have been since 2019, and the strong connection they've built with the community. "We love where we are," Freeman reflected. "We love being connected to the community. It’s nobody’s fault, it just happens." Cola Town Bike Collective has long been a cornerstone in local biking culture. Known for organizing rides, events, and advocating for bike-friendly policies in the Midlands, the collective boasts a vibrant Facebook group with over 2,400 members, symbolizing its integral role in the area's cycling scene. With community support and a resolved spirit, Cola Town Bike Collective is set to bounce back stronger, ready to continue its mission of fostering a thriving biking community in Columbia.
