A potentially tragic incident was narrowly avoided early this morning when a private bus traveling from Bhubaneswar to Malkangiri burst into flames following a rear tire burst near Ramabhadrapuram, Andhra Pradesh. The bus was carrying 37 passengers, including Odisha's Chitrakonda MLA Mongu Khila, who played a pivotal role in the emergency evacuation. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated, with no casualties or injuries reported. MLA Mongu Khila recounted the dramatic moments leading to their rescue. Around 3:00 AM, the driver noticed the bus was losing power, prompting him to stop and inspect the vehicle. Upon discovering the fire, the driver acted swiftly, alerting passengers and facilitating a timely evacuation. Most of the passengers were asleep at the time, which added urgency to the situation as MLA Khila helped awaken them and guide them to safety. Khila personally aided those in danger, focusing on women and small children who needed assistance during the escape. Heroically stepping into the role of rescuer, he ensured everyone disembarked safely before flames could reach critical areas. In the process, the MLA sustained a muscle strain in his shoulder and back, for which he is currently receiving physiotherapy from Dr. Sontosh Kumar Nayak. Despite the physical strain, Dr. Nayak confirmed that Khila is making good progress and is expected to recover fully soon. Although their lives were saved, many passengers lost their personal belongings to the fire. Efforts to salvage items were largely thwarted by the rapid spread of the flames. Rescue teams later arrived to extinguish the fire, and investigations are underway to understand the cause of the tire burst and associated mechanical failures.
