Actions of disobedience continue in Yerevan despite use of brute force by police

by Lilit Sept. 22, 2023

Despite the widespread use of police force, citizens in Yerevan are continuing their acts of disobedience by blocking streets and vocalizing chants such as "Artsakh" and "Nikol, traitor." They are also urging fellow citizens to join the growing movement aimed at supporting Artsakh. Police, including officers wearing red berets, are employing aggressive methods to detain protesters. Some individuals have been subjected to violence, even after being placed inside police vehicles. Numerous citizens have sustained injuries during the arrests. Students from various universities, including Yerevan State University (YSU), Brusov University, Pedagogical University, French University, European University and others, have joined the disobedience actions by declaring a strike and blocking streets in the city. Some school students have also participated in the strikes, and drivers are showing solidarity by honking their car horns. Numerous individuals have been detained during these actions, among them Andranik Tevanyan, coordinator of the "Mother Armenia" movement, who was later arrested and subsequently released. Concerned citizens, worried about the fate of Artsakh, have been staging protests in front of the government building for the third consecutive day. They are demanding the resignation of Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister, and are calling on the Armenian authorities to provide shelter to displaced Artsakh residents. A new phase of the uprising began today with round-the-clock acts of disobedience.
