The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the acquisition of outfielder Jacob Hurtubise on a minor league contract. According to Hurtubise's MLB.com profile, he will begin the next phase of his career with Triple-A Nashville, although the agreement does not include an invitation for spring training with the Milwaukee Brewers' major league team. Hurtubise, originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an undrafted player in 2020, has made 41 major league appearances, all with the Reds over the past two seasons. In June, the Reds designated him for assignment, leading to a series of moves involving a claim by the Mariners, an outright and release by July, and a subsequent minor league stint with the Astros until his release in September. At 28 years old, Hurtubise is now seeking another opportunity within the NL Central with the Brewers. Despite trading Isaac Collins to the Royals, Milwaukee has considerable outfield depth behind established players like Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, and Sal Frelick. Hurtubise will share the depth chart with players like Akil Baddoo, Brandon Lockridge, and Greg Jones, complementing Blake Perkins—Milwaukee's fourth outfielder. Hurtubise's minor league contract includes an option year, though his roster prospects are impacted by his exclusivity to the outfield positions. This could be challenging in an organization that favors versatile athletes for utility roles. Nonetheless, Hurtubise brings substantial experience at the center, right, and left outfield positions, along with exceptional speed and potential for pinch-running roles. Over his minor league career, he has successfully stolen 130 bases out of 153 attempts, with a .260/.411/.324 slash line in Triple-A appearances. Although these statistics do not mirror his major league outcome of a .167/.291/.212 line over 83 plate appearances, his on-base skills could prove valuable for the Brewers in depth situations.
