Unbridled Cinematic Experiences Await at Cinequest 2024

by Lilit Jan. 29, 2026

Prepare to be enthralled as Cinequest announces its 35th annual film festival, set to take place from March 10 to March 22, 2024, under the captivating theme 'Unbridled.' The festival aims to evoke profound emotional responses such as joy and passion, inviting attendees to indulge in an unrestrained appreciation of cinema. CEO Halfdan Hussey has expressed that the 'unbridled' theme is all about fostering a sense of freedom and excitement within the artistic community, a sentiment shared by his co-founder Kathleen Powell, albeit with a mix of feelings. Cinephiles are in for a treat with an impressive lineup featuring 268 films from 44 different countries, where 123 will be making their U.S. or world debut. A highlight includes the opening night film 'Her Song,' a comedy with notable production credentials, screened at the iconic California Theatre alongside a special 'AI and Film' presentation. This event underscores Cinequest's commitment to embracing technological advancements in filmmaking. The festival concludes with fanfare on March 22, presenting audiences with a choice between 'Maddie's Secret,' a fresh entry in comedic cinema, and 'The Christophers,' a black comedy by the acclaimed Steven Soderbergh, both showing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Mountain View. Notably, Cinequest has creatively split its venues between San Jose and Mountain View this year to diversify the audience experience. In an innovative twist, March 14 will see the festival bestowing two Maverick Spirit Awards in a single day at the California Theatre. Steve Zahn, along with director Rick Gomez, will present their film 'She Dances,' co-starring Ethan Hawke. Additionally, Vivica A. Fox will receive honors after the world premiere of 'Plan C.' Tickets, passes, and the complete lineup can be accessed from January 30 at www.cinequest.org. Meanwhile, the Preservation Action Council of San Jose (PACSJ) transitions its traditional rummage sales from Naglee Park to FOUND*SJ, a vibrant new 'rummage and reuse hub.' This 5,000 square-foot facility, adorned with historic photos, commemorates San Jose's past while offering vintage and collectible treasures. For those in the area, FOUND*SJ will host its grand opening with free parking, giving visitors a chance to explore this new cultural space, rooted in community history and creativity. With these multifaceted events, San Jose continues to bustle with creative energy and historical reverence, offering diverse experiences spanning film, art, and community engagement.
