As a major winter storm moves eastward, approximately 185 million people remain under winter weather alerts. The storm, which has caused at least nine deaths across Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Kansas, and Massachusetts, continues to create chaos with freezing temperatures sweeping across the eastern two-thirds of the United States. This morning, more than 820,000 customers are waking up without power, with Tennessee being particularly hard-hit, accounting for over 250,000 outages. The severe weather has disrupted air travel, with 12,000 flight cancellations yesterday and an additional 3,500 anticipated for today. Snow showers are ongoing in the Northeast, with the system expected to fully exit the East Coast by tonight. However, states like New England and parts of upstate New York could receive more snowfall. Meanwhile, regions near the Great Lakes are preparing for prolonged lake-effect snow lasting several days. The threat isn't limited to snow. Parts of the mid-Atlantic, including northern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, are facing freezing rain today, which may extend along the I-95 corridor up to New York City, worsening already dangerous travel conditions and potentially increasing power outages.
