China Vows Enhanced Cooperation with Somalia Amid Somaliland Controversy

by Lilit Jan. 12, 2026

In light of recent geopolitical developments, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has reconfirmed China's unwavering support for Somalia's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. During a strategic dialogue with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, Wang Yi assured that China will remain a staunch ally as Somalia navigates these turbulent waters. The conversation unfolded against the backdrop of Israel's contentious decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. This move has drawn global attention and widespread disapproval, particularly from the African Union, which has urged prompt retraction. Somaliland declared independence in 1991, yet its status remains internationally unacknowledged, a stance China emphatically supports. Wang's dialogue emphasized a deeper bilateral engagement, stating, "China firmly opposes any collusion of Somaliland with Taiwan aimed at achieving independence." In response to dynamic global changes, China pledges to deepen its collaboration with Somalia across security, defense, and economic sectors, ensuring the resilience of their strategic alliance. Highlighting the historic goodwill between the nations, Minister Wang affirmed that temporary global events will not disrupt the enduring China-Somalia partnership. Somali Foreign Minister Abdi Ali expressed gratitude for China's steadfast opposition to separatism and terrorism, recognizing China’s pivotal role in fostering Somalia's stability and growth. Although Wang's anticipated visit to Somalia was rescheduled due to 'friendly negotiations', his African diplomatic tour saw stops in Tanzania and Ethiopia, culminating in Lesotho. Notably, he inaugurated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges in Addis Ababa, demonstrating Beijing's commitment to fostering a promising future for its relations with Africa and the broader Global South. China has held the mantle of Africa's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, with trade reaching a historic $295.6 billion in 2024. This demonstrates an ongoing commitment to deepening bilateral ties across continents, reinforcing China's economic influence within Africa and fortifying cooperative efforts for mutual benefit.
