The Warriors are considering Porter Jr. to enhance their championship aspirations.

by Lilit Jan. 9, 2026

Consider the scenario of the Golden State Warriors enhancing their lineup by adding Michael Porter Jr. In a speculative trade discussion, it's suggested that acquiring the star player from the Denver Nuggets might involve trading two first-round draft picks and promising talent Jonathan Kuminga to Denver. Although Porter is not always Denver's primary scorer, he has recently been performing exceptionally well. After 28 games this season, he holds impressive averages of 26.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, along with sharp shooting percentages of .495-.411-.828. Such statistics suggest that the proposed trade value is quite reasonable for a player of his caliber. In Steve Kerr's 3-point-focused, spacing-oriented offense, Porter seems poised to excel, particularly as the team struggles with spacing issues when Kuminga is playing. The difference in their playing styles could hinder Golden State's strategies, making Porter an ideal addition. Golden State's emphasis on maintaining defensive stalwarts like Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler III, who are both known for shooting below 34 percent from the 3-point line, further increases Porter's appeal. His sharp shooting would significantly improve the Warriors' floor spacing and overall offensive balance. Moreover, at just 27 years old, Porter could extend the Warriors' championship contention period, combining youth with immediate impact. However, Porter's substantial contract, guaranteeing $38.3 million in 2025-26 and lasting until 2026-27, remains a key strategic factor to consider. Envisioning the Warriors' starting lineup with Porter as the small forward alongside Butler, Green, and Stephen Curry suggests exciting possibilities. With the team desperately needing offensive strength, given they rank 24th in average points per game among starters, Porter's contributions would be highly beneficial. Despite the complexities of trades beyond simple calculations, replacing Moses Moody with Porter offers a significant enhancement. Porter's 26.1 points per game far surpass those of Moody, Will Richard, or Gui Santos, highlighting his transformative potential for the Warriors.
