In the first three quarters of 2025, the Armenian Food Safety Inspection Body has reported alarming sanitary and hygiene issues across the majority of kindergartens inspected in Armenia. Of the 43 kindergartens audited this year, more than 65% were found to have serious hygiene violations, including lack of proper sanitary conditions, inadequate staff facilities, and failure in pest management protocols. Only two of these kindergartens faced suspensions due to the severity of their infractions. These numbers show a slight improvement over the previous year of 2024, where 49 out of 57 kindergartens were found violating similar health and safety measures, resulting in the suspension of operations in 8 of those institutions. Enforcement efforts by the inspection body seem to be making progress, although core issues persist. The most common infractions noted in 2025 include inadequate cleanliness, insufficient sanitary facilities for staff, and poor maintenance of kitchens. Pesticides were not properly managed, leading to insect problems in multiple facilities. Recurring offenders have been identified and subjected to fines as part of the regulatory enforcement measures in place. There is a pressing need for continuous monitoring and stricter compliance measures to ensure the health and safety of children attending these institutions. The report emphasizes the importance of rigorous sanitary practices and regular inspections to maintain high standards in educational environments. It calls for revised guidelines and increased accountability among kindergarten administrations to mitigate risks and foster a healthier learning space for children. The public and relevant stakeholders are urged to support comprehensive hygiene education and improved facility management within the education sector to safeguard children's health. Coordination between the inspection body and educational institutions is crucial to addressing and overcoming these challenges effectively. Future audits and follow-ups will be essential in measuring progress and maintaining transparency in efforts to uphold hygiene standards across all educational settings in Armenia.
