Bucs' Controversial Strategy Under Fire After Latest Defeat

by Lilit Dec. 22, 2025

In a gripping yet disappointing display, the latest game marked a controversial strategic choice from the Buccaneers. The team faced criticism after opting repeatedly to run the ball up the middle against a formidable Panthers' defense featuring defensive tackle Derrick Brown—despite being manhandled and with backup offensive linemen Dan Feeney and Mike Jordan filling in crucial roles. This decision was particularly confounding given the stark underperformance of running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn, who has averaged only 3.68 yards per carry since his return—a stat made even more glaring by his inability to surpass four yards per carry in any contest this season. Contrastingly, other backs such as Rachaad White posted a more impressive 6.57 yards per carry over the same period, albeit with fewer chances, and Sean Tucker, making notable contributions in the red zone by scoring in three consecutive games. Yet Todd Bowles, head coach of the Buccaneers, stood by his game strategy. Post-game, he pointed out their focus on the game was managing the clock rather than dominating on the scoreboard. Bowles confidently stated, "Statistically, rushing over 30 times per game usually works in our favor. And while we had more running opportunities, our aim was to control possession and the clock." Yet this focused retention of possession proved futile without translating it into adequate points on the board. The debate intensifies, especially given how quarterback Baker Mayfield, alongside his skilled receivers, represents the bedrock of the offensive strength. Critics argue the Bucs should have utilized Mayfield's passing abilities more vigorously, relying on the team’s core offensive strength to grapple with the mounting losses this season. Mayfield, albeit inconsistent, remained the team’s franchise cornerstone, criticized yet enduring. As the season teeters on the brink, the reality that their playoff aspirations are dimming sharply overshadows them. Even though a slender hope lingers if they manage to clinch their remaining games, the consensus is growing bleak about their prospects should they navigate into the playoff stage. The Bucs' inability to ignite their potential on the field leaves fans and analysts alike speculating over future tactical shifts that must be made to salvage any remaining chance of real success this season.
