One of the factors causing mistrust in relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union (EU) was the extension of the mandate of the European monitoring mission at the border without agreement or consultation with Azerbaijan, stated its president, Ilham Aliyev. He expressed bewilderment about the need for it. "In October 2022 in Prague, Azerbaijan agreed to the temporary presence—for a period of two months—of a [European] mission consisting of a limited number of retired officers. However, when [the mandate of] the [aforementioned] mission was extended, Azerbaijan was not informed about it and was not consulted. Currently, negotiations are underway to extend the mission for an additional period," noted the president of Azerbaijan. Also, Aliyev expressed displeasure with the behavior of the members of this EU monitoring mission in Armenia, calling it a "binocular diplomacy." He emphasized that Azerbaijan intends to raise this issue in its contacts with the European Union.
