Ruling majority faction votes against setting up Armenia parliament inquiry committee on people of Karabakh

by Lilit Oct. 2, 2024

The matter of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia inquiry committee to be set up in order to study the conditions of the organizing of the life activities of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Armenians, who were forcibly displaced from Artsakh and moved to Armenia, was put to the vote at Wednesday's session of the NA, but was rejected. The parliamentary opposition of Armenia proposes to set up an NA inquiry committee to study the living conditions of the aforesaid Artsakh Armenians. Hayk Konjoryan, head of the ruling majority Civil Contract Faction of the NA, delivered remarks at the session and announced that the faction will vote against this proposal. Konjoryan stated that the Armenian government and the ruling NA faction have implemented many programs from the first day and introduced a number of legislative regulations towards ensuring the livelihood of Armenians who were forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh, providing them social and housing support and a number of other programs, and added that they continue. "And we, listening to the main speaker yesterday, did not see a well-argued justification why these questions—if they have such questions—should be answered by the setting up of the inquiry committee itself, the justifications were not well-argued for us, therefore the Civil Contract Faction will vote against this draft," Konjoryan added, in part. Subsequently, the Civil Contract Faction voted against the aforementioned proposal and its draft did not pass. The main purpose of the setting up of this parliamentary inquiry committee was to study the conditions of ensuring the livelihood of the Artsakh Armenians who were forcibly displaced to Armenia, analyze the needs assessment system, and record the inconsistencies in the programs being implemented for these Armenians, and propose solutions.
