The number of residents over 100 years old has exceeded 95,100 in Japan. This is an absolute record for the entire period of keeping such statistics since 1963, reports the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of the country. In Japan, the number of people over 100 years old has increased for 54 consecutive years. In 2023, it had grown by almost 3,000. Among Japanese people over 100 years old, more than 88 percent are women. The oldest person on Earth, 116-year-old Tomiko Itoka, who was born in 1908, also lives in Japan. The number of Japanese residents over the age of 65 has increased by 20,000 over the past year to a historic record of 36.25 million. Currently, they make up 29.3 percent of Japan's population. And the number of Japanese over 80 has reached almost 13 million; this is 10.4 percent of Japan's total population, which is about 125.1 million.
