The countries of the Middle East should refrain from retaliatory actions amid the escalation of the regional conflict, as this will lead to a vicious cycle of endless conflicts, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. He added that a comprehensive ceasefire needs to be reached in the Gaza Strip. "Revenge begets revenge and leads to a vicious circle. Responding to violence with violence will lead to the escalation of disagreements," Wang said, informs the Chinese foreign ministry. Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with his Egyptian colleague, Badr Abdelatty. The Chinese FM emphasized that the international community should not follow double standards in the Gaza conflict. "China's position on the Palestinian issue is consistent and clear," he added. Beijing has proposed a three-step initiative: a comprehensive ceasefire, support for post-war governance in Gaza based on the principle of "Palestinians governing Palestinians," and effective implementation of the "two states for two peoples" plan. Wang Yi noted that China "will continue to be on the side of international justice, strengthen solidarity with the Arab states, cooperate with all parties to prevent the escalation [of tension] and further deterioration of the situation in the Middle East."
