Israel has not openly informed the US that it is behind the assassination—in Tehran—of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, The Washington Post reports. Immediately after Haniyeh's assassination, the Jewish state informed the US leadership that it claims responsibility for this assassination. The American authorities took this news with surprise and indignation, seeing in it a failure of many months of efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
