Armenian Parliament Vice Speaker Hakob Arshakyan met with the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong at the UN Headquarters in New York within the framework of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. During the meeting, Hakobyan presented regional developments, current challenges, and touched upon the problems of return of prisoners and other persons held in Azerbaijan, Armenian News-NEWS.am was informed by the press service of the National Assembly of the Republic. “RA believes that a strong democratic state, based on human rights and the rule of law, is an important guarantee of ensuring the state and society's resilience to numerous challenges and crises,” Arshakyan noted. Highly assessing the efforts of the international partners in promoting the dialog between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the RA NA Vice Speaker also assessed Chungong's activity in that aspect. The IPU Secretary General shared warm impressions of his recent visit to Armenia, and also touched upon the 10th conference of the young deputies of the IPU, scheduled in September in Armenia. “The Armenian Parliament is the most youthful in the world, and I am glad that the 10th conference of the IPU Young Deputies will be held in the RA,” he noted. The IPU Secretary General expressed support for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and added that the Union will make efforts for the development of the process. At the end of the meeting Mr. Chungong noted that the cooperation between the RA National Assembly and the IPU is encouraging, the Armenian deputies are actively involved in the work of different bodies of the Union.
