How many seats elected political forces to receive in new Yerevan city council?

by Lilit Sept. 18, 2023

The Central Electoral Commission of Armenia has completed the electronic counting of the votes cast in Sunday’s elections for the Yerevan Council of Elders. The results of all 475 polling stations have been summed up, and according to preliminary data, these five political forces have won seats in the new Yerevan Council of Elders: ruling Civil Contract Party, National Progress Party, Mother Armenia alliance, Republic Party, and Public Voice Party. Also according to preliminary data, the respective seats shall be distributed as follows: Civil Contract Party - 24 seats National Progress Party - 14 seats Mother Armenia alliance - 12 seats Republic Party - 8 seats Public Voice Party - 7 seats Since none of these political forces have received more than 50 percent of votes, it will be necessary to form a coalition, for which more than 50 percent is needed; that is, 33 seats. The need to form a coalition has risen for the first time in the history of Armenia. Although there were coalitions in the past in the country’s parliament, they were not due to insufficient number of votes cast for the ruling force; that is, they were not necessary by law.
