News - Armenia FM: We believe there is real opportunity for lasting peace in the region

We believe there is a real opportunity, a historical momentum to finalize the draft peace treaty, the signing of which could open the door for lasting peace in the region. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated this in his opening remarks at the start of the capstone meeting of the Armenia-US Strategic Dialogue.   Armenian FM noted that this meeting is an example of a high level of political dialogue, which will give an impetus to the further development of relations based on loyalty to democratic principles. Mirzoyan emphasized that despite the existing challenges, the Armenian government follows the line of strengthening democratic principles. "I do believe that our like-minded partners, and namely the USA, fully support and stand with us to prove that democracies are capable of delivering," Mirzoyan noted, adding that cooperation covers the most ancient domains: defense, high technology, justice, economy, etc. The Armenian FM recalled that a high-level meeting was held in Brussels on April 5, the results of which confirmed the expanded cooperation and the great potential of supporting peace and stability in the South Caucasus. Also, Mirzoyan documented the participation of the US in the establishment of a dignified peace, along with the consistent support of Armenia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. In this context, Mirzoyan confirmed Armenia's commitment to the normalization of relations and the border delimitation process with Azerbaijan—and based on the Almaty Declaration of 1991. According to Mirzoyan, there is "a real opportunity, a historical momentum to finalize the draft peace treaty, the signing of which could open the door for lasting peace in the region." Also, the FM stressed Armenia's interest in opening all regional communications on the basis of countries' sovereignty, equality and reciprocity, which is reflected in the Crossroads of Peace initiative of the Armenian government.
