Iran will not allow its historical route with Armenia to be closed

by Lilit Sept. 17, 2023

In an interview with the Iranian newspaper Al-Wefaq in Arabic, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, commenting on the issue of "Zangezur Corridor," said that Iran will not allow its historical route in this region connecting Iran with Armenia to be limited or closed, IRNA reports. Hossein Amirabdollahian said that upholding the Axis of Resistance is a fundamental policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He also noted in the interview that while Iran interacts with countries of the East and West to protect its national interests, it has “neither East nor West” policy to maintain its independence. The Foreign Minister called the Axis of Resistance "one of the most important aspects of our foreign policy.” Amirabdollahian noted that some Arab countries have normalized their relations with Israel, but this move has forced the regime to ignore the sovereignty of these countries. “Our security agencies have detailed documentation that the Zionist regime ignores the sovereignty of those countries and takes actions against the security of the region without their knowledge,” he said, adding, “Therefore, to imagine that normalization of relations with the Zionist regime brings benefits to the Islamic world and the countries of the region is far from the truth.” Amirabdollahian made clear that, regardless of any future attempts by Arab and Islamic countries to normalize relations with the "fake and aggressive Zionist regime," Iran will steadfastly uphold its principle of defending the resistance in the region. “Supporting the resistance means guaranteeing a region that we, as Iran, live in,” he stated. In his interview, the Iranian Foreign Minister also touched upon the issue of Syria. He said that the leaders of Arab countries, Islamic states and the region understand Syria's position well. “Syria is not a country that can be deleted from the regional equations,” Amirabdollahian emphasized. “On the issue of security in the joint borders between Syria and Turkey, Amirabdollahian said the Islamic Republic pursues consultation with its Turkish brothers about finding ways to both remove Turkiye’s concerns and preserve Syria’s territorial integrity,” the media outlet writes.
