by Lilit Sept. 17, 2023

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Armenia has just published data on the final voter turnout for the September 17 elections to the Council of Elders of Yerevan (the capital's representative body). As Vahagn Hovakimyan, Chairman of the Central Election Commission, stated at a briefing, at 20:00 local time, by the time the polling stations closed, 234,553 voters out of 824,250 took part in the elections, which is 28.46% of those with the right to vote. Voter turnout per administrative district of Yerevan: Achapnyak - 23,229 voters or 27.98% Avan - 12,575 voters or 32.22% Arabkir - 29,301 voters or 30.99% Davtashen - 10,709 voters or 31.98% Erebuni - 21,719 voters or 24.35% Kentron - 28,714 people, or 30.25% Malatya-Sebastia - 27,490 voters or 25.86% Nor-Nork - 28,889 voters or 29.63% Norq-Marash - 3,314 voters or 31.07% Nubarashen - 2,250 voters or 27.9% Shengavit - 29,357 voters or 26.5% Kanaker-Zeytun - 17,006 voters or 29.98%. This is a record low voter activity; a similar picture has never been recorded in the capital of Armenia. In the previous mayoral elections, held on September 23, 2018, against the backdrop of euphoria from the “velvet revolution,” the final turnout was 43.65% - 370,324 voters out of 848,343 came to the ballot boxes. Moreover, in the elections to the capital’s representative body on May 14, 2017, before the “Velvet Revolution,” the turnout was 40.99% (345,226).
