News - Voting in elections to representative body of capital began in Yerevan

Polling stations for the elections to the capital's representative body are opening across the Armenian capital these minutes. Voting in the elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders will last from 08.00 to 20.00 local time, after which the vote counting will begin. Armenia's Central Election Commission is expected to begin announcing the very first preliminary results of the elections around midnight, and this process will continue until the morning of September 18. Starting at noon, the Central Election Commission will report voter turnout data every three hours. Elections are held under a proportional electoral system. The persons heading the party lists are potential candidates for mayor of Yerevan. If a political party manages to get an absolute majority of seats in the capital's representative body (33), its representative will become the mayor of Yerevan by virtue of the law, i.e. mechanically. Otherwise, the process of forming political coalitions will begin. There are 13 political parties and 1 bloc competing for 65 seats in the Yerevan Council of Elders.
