Kremlin spox: Putin, Pashinyan agreed on Russia military’s withdrawal from some Armenia provinces

by Lilit May 9, 2024

Moscow and Yerevan have agreed on the pulling out of Russian military and border guards from some provinces of Armenia, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian president, reports RIA Novosti. At the request of the Armenian side, however, the Russian border guards will remain at Armenia’s border with Iran and Turkey, he added. According to Peskov, at the request of the Armenian side in the fall of 2020, Russian soldiers and border guards were deployed in a number of Armenian provinces. "[Armenian PM Nikol] Pashinyan said that today there is no longer such demand in connection with the changed conditions, so [Russian] President [Vladimir] Putin agreed, and the pulling out of our military, border guards was agreed," he informed. The Russian presidential press secretary noted, however, that again at the request of the Armenian side, the Russian border guards will remain at the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian borders. "They will stay there and continue to perform their functions," added Peskov. In general, as per the Kremlin spokesperson, the positive dynamics of the development of Armenian-Russian trade and economic relations were mainly discussed during Wednesday’s meeting between Putin and Pashinyan, in Moscow.
