Elections to representative body of capital will be held in Armenia today

by Lilit Sept. 17, 2023

Today, elections to the capital's representative body will be held in Armenia. Voting in the elections to the Yerevan Council of Elders will start at 08.00 local time and will end at 20.00. Yerevan is home to more than one-third of Armenia's voters. The capital's representative body is elected for a 5-year term. Sixty-five people will be elected to it. The capital was the first to switch to a proportional electoral system in 2009, which means that Yerevan residents will vote for political parties and blocs, and the persons heading their party lists are potential candidates for mayor. If a political force manages to get an absolute majority of seats in the capital's representative body (33), its representative will become the mayor of Yerevan by virtue of the law, i.e. mechanically. Otherwise, the process of forming political coalitions will begin. There are 13 political parties and 1 bloc in the current race. Armenian News-NEWS.am, a news and analysis agency, will work in emergency mode on September 17, promptly informing in Armenian, Russian, and English on the progress of the elections and the results of vote counting.
