Court in Belgium sentences defendants accused in deadliest terrorist attack in the country's history

by Lilit Sept. 16, 2023

A Belgian court on Friday sentenced five men to terms ranging from 20 years to life in prison on terrorism charges in connection with the 2016 suicide bombings that killed 32 people and injured hundreds at Brussels airport and a busy subway station, the country's deadliest peacetime attack, The Associated Press reported. The prime suspect, Salah Abdeslam, was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a shooting attack days before the March 22, 2016 attacks and received no further prison time. Abdeslam was serving a life sentence without parole in France for his involvement in the 2015 attacks on Paris cafes, the Bataclan theater, and France's national stadium. Both the Paris and Brussels attacks were linked to the same Islamic State network. A total of 10 defendants were involved in the largest trial in Belgian history. Two of the defendants, who were brothers, were acquitted of all charges. The remaining eight were convicted of participating in the activities of a terrorist group; six of those eight were also convicted of terrorist murder.
