In 2023, 817 people requested asylum in Armenia. The head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of Armenia, Armen Ghazaryan, stated this at Tuesday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly. According to him, the number of asylum seekers in Armenia was 206 in 2020, 260 in 2021, and 968 in 2022. According to the head of the aforesaid service, this sharp increase was linked with the Russian military operations in Ukraine. "The trend was maintained in 2023. However, there is a certain decrease. Until 2022, the first places were usually occupied by the citizens of the countries of the Middle East: Syria, Iraq, and Egypt," said Ghazaryan. But in 2022 and 2023, the Ukrainian nationals took the first place in this regard, and the Syrian and Iraqi citizens were second and third. As for Indian nationals, the head of the Migration and Citizenship Service noted that they did not submit a request for asylum in Armenia last year, but there were one or two such cases in previous years.
