Nikol Pashinyan: No agreement yet between Armenia, Azerbaijan regarding maps

by Lilit March 20, 2024

In Tavush Province, PM Nikol Pashinyan said Azerbaijan wants a section that is not part of Armenia. On which map exactly did Armenia and Azerbaijan agree in this regard? Opposition MP Gegham Manukyan asked this during the National Assembly’s question-and-answer session with the Armenian government Wednesday. In response, PM Pashinyan said: "At the moment, there is no agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the maps. There is an agreement that Armenia and Azerbaijan recognize each other's territorial integrity based on the Alma Ata declaration [of 1991]. There is an understanding that a [border] delimitation process shall take place between the two countries. The Alma Ata declaration shall be the political basis for that as well. Carrying out delimitation on the basis of the Alma Ata declaration does not mean creating a new border, but re-expressing on the ground the most recent de jure borders of the [former] Soviet Union.” The Armenian PM added that at his meeting with the residents of Voskepar and Kirants villages in Tavush Province, speaking about Azerbaijan's positions, he spoke about Azerbaijan's publicly expressed positions, which are accessible to everyone.
