Kremlin: Azerbaijan did not consent to EU monitoring mission in Armenia

by Lilit March 20, 2024

The Kremlin considered the effectiveness of the European Union (EU) monitoring mission on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border to be doubtful. This is how Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented to the reporters about the Armenian parliament’s ratification of the agreement granting immunity to the EU monitors in Armenia, as well as the expansion of this mission in the country, reports RIA Novosti. "Here, perhaps, it is worth questioning the potential effectiveness of such a mission... The question is, what the object of monitoring is and whether this mission is recognized by the Azerbaijani side. If we understand correctly, the Azerbaijani side has a very negative attitude towards the functions of that mission, and I doubt that such a mandate will be fulfilled there with understanding," said Peskov. The Kremlin spokesperson said the actions of the Armenian side in the context of the deployment and activity of this EU monitoring mission were "a unilateral decision of Yerevan." As reported earlier, the Armenian parliament on Wednesday ratified the agreement between Armenia and the EU on the status of the EU civilian monitoring mission in Armenia.
