Armenia can apply for membership in the European Union (EU). Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission of the EU, told about this to Izvestia. Countries have the right to strive for a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to ensure such a future. As for EU membership, each European country—its people and government—must decide whether it wants to apply for EU membership, the EU official said in response to the question whether EU’s doors are open to Armenia. Also, Stano recalled that as soon as a country submits an application for EU membership, it is discussed by the member states, and then they make a respective decision based on the EU treaties and established standards.
