PM: European Parliament resolution is another opportunity to discuss vision of Armenia's future

by Lilit March 14, 2024

The European Parliament yesterday adopted the resolution on the need for closer ties between the European Union (EU) and Armenia and a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced this at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting of the Armenian government. "This document, supported by all [European Parliament] factions, was adopted with 504 votes in favor, 4 against, and 32 abstentions. Based on the Alma Ata declaration of 1991, the resolution expresses unwavering support for Armenia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. Also, it supports the peace efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan. With this resolution, the European Parliament recorded Armenia's achievements in the domain of democracy, rule of law, fight against corruption, which is extremely important for the international perception of our country. The resolution cited the statement I made from the rostrum of the European Parliament last year on October 17, that Armenia is ready to be closer to the EU as much as the EU deems it possible, recording that if Armenia wishes to submit an application to become a candidate for EU membership, the EU institutions should support," Pashinyan said. Welcoming the aforesaid resolution of the European Parliament, the PM expressed his opinion that it should become a subject of discussion in Armenia. "This is another occasion to discuss the vision of Armenia's future, and I hope that the political forces, NGOs, various layers of society, citizens of Armenia will express their attitude towards this message made from the European Parliament because such messages need a much wider response than the government or parliamentary majority. At the same time, I must express the will of the Armenian government to continue the work in the direction of further deepening and development of Armenia-EU relations," said Pashinyan.
