According to Spanish lawmaker Jon Inarritu, addressing the rights of the forcibly displaced Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh should always be at the focus of the international community, and clear steps are needed in this regard by an organization such as the European Union (EU). This was emphasized by the aforesaid Spanish MP in response to Armenpress' question, adding that despite other global conflicts currently on which politicians' and media's attention is focused, the painful events that happened in Nagorno-Karabakh just six months ago should not be ignored. "The tragic situation and suffering of innocent people require immediate attention and steps from the international community, especially from such organizations as the European Union," Inarritu stressed. According to him, there is an urgent need for the intervention by the international community to ensure the rights and safety of more than a hundred thousand displaced Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, who have been forced to leave their homes to escape violence and persecution by Azerbaijan. The Spanish legislator expressed his opinion that the recent history of the Armenian nation is marked by living in those lands—i.e. in Nagorno-Karabakh—for thousands of years, which, however, in this case, has been devoid of Armenians as a result of the aggressive policy of Azerbaijan. "In recent years, we witnessed a rapid campaign of ethnic cleansing [of Armenians] being carried out by the Azerbaijani regime, the initial phase of which unfolded in 2020, during the war against Nagorno-Karabakh, instigated by Azerbaijan—with the support of Turkey. It was followed by the second wave of violence in September 2023," the Spanish lawmaker noted, adding that those events, unfortunately, led to the complete disappearance of the Armenian population from their ancestral homeland. "As Europeans, we often proclaim ourselves as defenders of human rights. Now is the time to demonstrate this commitment with concrete action, not vague political rhetoric. It is imperative that we take decisive action to overcome this humanitarian crisis and uphold our principles of human rights protection," Jon Inarritu concluded.
