The Armenian government wants to apply for international standards and have the Kapan city airport serve international flights as well. Gnel Sanosyan, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, announced this during the presentation of the report on the progress and results of the 2023 implementation of the Armenian government's 2021-2026 program at the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs of the National Assembly—and in response to the question of Hovik Aghazaryan, an MP of the majority faction, Armenpress reported. Aghazaryan noted that according to the contract on the transfer of Zvartnots International Airport of Yerevan to concession management, there is no right to build an international airport 250 kilometers from this airport. Sanosyan said that there is such a clause in the aforesaid contract since 2001, when Zvartnots airport was handed over to concession management. "We are now negotiating with partners to make a change in connection with that point. Our intention and desire is to have the Kapan airport serve not only domestic flights, but also international flights. And now we are negotiating to make a change in this point. And by removing this restriction, we can submit an application for international standards and make the Kapan airport an international airport," said the minister. Majority faction MP Babken Tunyan, for his part, stated that the aforementioned concession management contract is coming to an end, and the time is coming to sign a new one.
