The Popocatepetl volcano, which is 70 kilometers from the capital Mexico City, has become active and started spewing steam and ash into the atmosphere, informs Mexico’s National Center for Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED). "In the past 24 hours, 9 emissions were recorded, as well as 1,394 minutes of high-frequency and low-amplitude volcanic tremors," CENAPRED noted. According to its data, this activity of the volcano was accompanied by emissions of water vapor, ash, and various gases. "The Popocatepetl volcano danger warning light is in the second stage (out of three possible)," CENAPRED added. The volcanologists noted that the current safe distance from the crater of this volcano is 12 kilometers. Popocatepetl is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Mexico. Its height reaches 5,420 meters.
