Congress drafts bill to ban TikTok in US

by Lilit March 6, 2024

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have prepared a bill aimed at banning TikTok social network, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, The Hill reports. Republican Mike Gallagher and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi are the authors of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The bill would force ByteDance to abandon TikTok, or the latter could be banned in the US. If the company does not abandon TikTok, its distribution through the App Store or through web hosting will become illegal in the US, which will effectively ban even existing users, the statement said. The bill will enable the US president to ban other apps that are controlled by "foreign adversaries" It is about China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran, the statement added.
