News - Italy to build world's longest suspension bridge

The Italian authorities are preparing to implement the “millennium plan” for the construction of the world's longest suspension bridge. It will pass through the Strait of Messina, connecting the mainland of the country with its island of Sicily, reports Naked Science. The length of this bridge, which will be built on a thin layer of sea, will be approximately 3,300 meters, which will make it the longest suspension bridge in the world. In length, it will exceed the suspension bridge of Canakkale in Turkey, which reaches 2,023 meters. Environmentalists and many architects were skeptical of the plan. But Matteo Salvini, Italy’s infrastructure minister, said that despite all the risks and doubts, the world's longest suspension bridge will still be built. The project will last 15 years, and its budget will be at least 12 billion euros.
