News - Azerbaijan holding snap presidential election

Snap presidential elections are being held in Azerbaijan today. Seven candidates are running, but the current president and presidential candidate from the ruling party, Ilham Aliyev, is the top contender. The incumbent president has been in power since October 2003 and has already been "re-elected" several times. The power was literally inherited by Aliyev Jr. after the death of his father, Heydar Aliyev. What result will be recorded in today’s elections is obvious, which is evidenced also by the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities did not invite any election observers from the European parliamentary organizations.
