Simonyan to Adamova: Armenia-Azerbaijan relations should be based on mutual recognition of territorial integrity

by Lilit Jan. 31, 2024

The speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, on Wednesday received a delegation led by the President of the  Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Marketa Pekarova Adamova. The meeting began with a private conversation between the speakers of the two parliaments, and an enlarged meeting followed it, the NA informed. Welcoming his colleagues, Simonyan noted that Armenia greatly evaluates the stable development of friendly relations with the Czech Republic. The parties documented that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and the Czech Republic firm inter-state relations and multilateral agenda of cooperation have been succeeded to develop. Touching upon the ethnic cleansing unleashed against the Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians by Azerbaijan on September 19, 2023, the NA speaker presented to his Czech colleagues the existing problems, particularly the negotiation process on the Armenian captives being in Azerbaijan and the peace treaty. “The position of Armenia on the agenda of the establishment of peace in the region is clear: we should establish peaceful relations which are based on the mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, I should record the policy pursued by Azerbaijan that in recent period this process leads to a deadlock,” the NA speaker noted. “In this respect, the EU long-term monitoring mission on a security plane is of vital importance for Armenia. We value the contribution of the Czech Republic.” Marketa Pekarova Adamova, in turn, lauded the efforts of Armenia in the establishment of peace in the region, and expressed trust that the Czech Republic will try to promote the normalization of the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the peace treaty. The parties discussed the possibilities of the development of the Armenian-Czech parliamentary relations. The heads of the two parliaments highlighted the necessity of continuous expansion on the agenda aimed at democratic values. At the end of the meeting the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament left a note in the NA Book of Honored Guests. And after the enlarged meeting, Alen Simonyan and Marketa Pekarova Adamova held a joint news conference.
