FM: Greece clearly supports preservation of Christian sites in Karabakh

by Lilit Jan. 10, 2024

Greece clearly supports the preservation of Christian sites in Nagorno-Karabakh. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, who is on an official visit to Armenia, stated this during Wednesday’s joint news conference with his Armenian colleague, Ararat Mirzoyan. The Greek FM emphasized the importance of protecting the Armenian cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh, and said Athens plans to work on this matter—and in cooperation with UNESCO. Greece clearly supports the preservation of Christian sites in Nagorno-Karabakh and wants UNESCO to identify possible threats, Gerapetritis said. Also, he reaffirmed his country's readiness to assist the deepening of relations between Armenia and the EU, saying that Greece is always ready to be a reliable partner and sincerely believes that the prosperity of Armenia can only be with Europe. Speaking about the peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Greek FM said that his country believes in dialogue. Greece says three words that refer to the situation in other countries and the world: democracy, diplomacy, and dialogue. The parties involved must be in dialogue. Armenia's Crossroads of Peace initiative is a very realistic and fair solution, and the peace process should address specific issues, added the FM of Greece. The delimitation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be clear to prevent future barbarism, there is a real possibility of achieving the goal, and there should be no military action, Gerapetritis said, and approve the steps being taken by the Armenian government in the process of achieving peace.
