Newspaper: Attacks on judges gaining new momentum in Armenia

by Lilit Jan. 10, 2024

Zhoghovurd newspaper of the Republic of Armenia (RA) writes: The authorities’ pressures against the judicial system are gaining new momentum; a citizen reported a bribe to the police. Zhoghovurd daily learned that on Holy Easter Day, January 5, a citizen, with the name and surname of Armen Khaloyan, petitioned to the RA MIA [(Ministry of Internal Affairs)] Police, and reported that Lyova Grigoryan, a judge of the RA Court of Appeal, who has been working as a judge of the RA Civil Court of Appeal since 2001, and RA Court of Cassation judge Varuzhan Abelyan, who has already retired, demanded money from him to "make a fair verdict." Khaloyan complained to the law enforcement officers that in 2004-2006 the said judges demanded 3,000 US dollars from him to make a decision in his favor. The police, of course, fulfilling their duty, promptly sent the prepared documents to the RA Anti-Corruption Committee. Zhoghovurd daily will follow up on this topic to find out the details of what hidden political trail there is here, or if there is or not.
