Armenia government bans leather exports for 6 months

by Lilit Jan. 4, 2024

At Thursday's cabinet session, the government decided to ban the export of leather from Armenia for six months. The ban applies to raw hides of cattle or horses, sheep, and lambs originating in Armenia. The decision is explained by the fact that local companies engaged in leather processing in Armenia have a demand for leather raw materials, and the capability of the raw material base in the country is still not being used to its full capacity. Armenia’s leather processing companies mostly carry out the first phase of leather processing and export it in the "wet blue" version. The goal is to deepen the value chain and obtain higher-value leather through the use of new technologies and the development of production capacity. With this decision, the government plans to transform Armenia from a country that exports raw materials into a country that exports processed products. The aforesaid ban applies also to the export of leather to other Eurasian Economic Union countries.
