Before the construction of sanitary landfills in eight provinces of Armenia, as well as in capital Yerevan, the state will modernize and improve the existing ones. The government adopted this decision at Thursday's cabinet meeting. The respective draft decision states that with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), it is planned to build a sanitary landfill in Yerevan that meets EU standards, and to close down the existing one in the city. Also, with the support of the EBRD, it is planned to implement the program on the introduction of an integrated solid waste system management in eight provinces of Armenia, and within its framework to zone the country in terms of solid waste management, and to create an effective institutional and management system in this regard. "Taking into account the fact that the construction of new sanitary landfills will take a lot of time, the improvement processes of the existing landfills have become very necessary," the aforesaid draft decision states. With this program, Armenia expects to ensure environmentally safe conditions, as well as to reduce or neutralize the negative and dangerous effects of landfills on human health and the environment.
