News - Iceland volcano eruption slowing, nearby town residents to be allowed to briefly return home

The intensity of the volcanic eruption near Iceland's capital Reykjavik is weakening, and the residents of the nearby town of Grindavik will be allowed to briefly return home, RUV informed. The lava flows from two main sources, from a fissure about 4 kilometers long that was formed at the beginning of the eruption. Compared to the first days, the intensity of this volcanic eruption has dropped considerably to about 10 cubic meters per second. The surface of the frozen lava reached 3.7 square kilometers. After midnight, 20 small underground tremors were registered in that region, and their number has reached 65 since Wednesday. Residents of the nearby town of Grindavik were allowed to return home between 7am and 4pm on certain roads. In the first days of the volcanic eruption, only emergency services’ specialists could be found in the city.
