Peter Stano: EU does not plan to hold military exercises with Armenia

by Lilit Dec. 10, 2023

The European Union does not plan to conduct military exercises with Armenia. This was stated by Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission of the European Union (EU), in an interview with Izvestia. The EU does not consider the possibility of joint military exercises with Armenia. The EU is not a military alliance, it is a political and economic community of values, Stano said. He added that the European Union does not plan to train the Armenian military in the territory of the EU member states. The European Union is exploring the possibility of providing assistance to the Armenian army through the Europe Peace Foundation in a “non-lethal format,” but there are no specific solutions yet, Stano said. Despite the fact that some analysts expected active actions by Western countries in the Armenian direction, in reality the situation is developing in a different scenario. In particular, Germany does not hide that it does not plan to considerably increase military cooperation with Armenia. Jan Nolte, a member of the Bundestag defense committee, told Izvestia that the German parliament is not considering the possibility of supplying arms to Armenia. The German authorities want to continue supporting Ukraine with weapons, and it is already difficult in the current situation, Nolte said. It is also unclear how the situation in Israel and Gaza will develop, he added, noting that he does not think anyone in Germany wants to supply arms to Armenia; at least it's not on the defense committee's agenda. Now Germany has limited itself to humanitarian and diplomatic support to Armenia. In early November, Berlin pledged to allocate 9.3 million euros to help the refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh in Armenia.
