Israeli forces in Gaza arrest Palestinians, force them through ‘unstaffed checkpoints’

by Lilit Nov. 26, 2023

The United Nations Office of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said Israeli forces were arresting people moving from northern and central Gaza to the south through the crossing, which Israel calls a “corridor”, Al Jazeera reported. According to UNOCHA, people are forced through an “unstaffed checkpoint" where they are asked to show identification documents and "undergo what appears to be a facial recognition scan." Last week, the UN reported an incident where a child had to walk through a checkpoint unaccompanied as the father had been apprehended at so-called corridor. The UN has voiced concern regarding the necessity of expanding child protection services to provide assistance to children who are without adult companionship.
