A container ship owned by an Israeli billionaire was attacked by a suspected Iranian drone in the Indian Ocean, a U.S. defense official told the AP news agency on Saturday. The attack on the CMA CGM Symi vessel took place on Friday. A defense official, who spoke to the agency on condition of anonymity, said the Malta-flagged vessel was "allegedly attacked by a Shahed-136 triangle-shaped drone" carrying a bomb while in international waters. He said the drone exploded, causing damage to the vessel, but none of its crew were injured. "We continue to monitor the situation closely," the Pentagon official said. However, he did not elaborate on what intelligence the U.S. military had gathered that allowed them to suggest Iran was behind the attack. "The attack was likely targeted because the ship was linked to Israel through Eastern Pacific Shipping," private intelligence company Ambrey told the AP. The Symi vessel is owned by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which is controlled by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.
