If the principles of peace with Azerbaijan have been agreed upon, what is the problem? Why don't we sign the peace treaty? Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in his remarks Thursday during the debates on the 2024 state budget draft in the National Assembly of Armenia. "By and large, the reason is the lack of trust between the parties because every time we see in some of our statements, actions by Azerbaijan, perhaps Azerbaijan, intentions to abandon the above-mentioned agreements and plan aggressive actions, which negatively affects the textual work of the peace treaty," added the Armenian PM. Pashinyan announced that there are several more key matters to be clarified in this regard in the near future, and one of which is the wording of the mechanism for overcoming possible misinterpretations regarding the content of this peace treaty. "Sadly, the reality is such that every sentence can sometimes be interpreted in different ways; therefore we must have a very clear mechanism on how we will overcome this in case of different interpretations. The other is the creation of security guarantees so that no escalation [of tension] is possible after the signing of the peace treaty," said the Armenian premier. He noted that the Armenian government and he personally intends to intensify the diplomatic and political work aimed at overcoming these matters, and will regularly report to the public about the respective progress. "I express hope that 2024 will be a peace budget, and 2024 will be our first year of stable and lasting peace," said Pashinyan.
